Reforestation / Restoración

 

Reforestation is an important part of the fight against climate change. As part of our mission, the Mindo Cloudforest Foundation is planting native species trees in the Northwestern Ecuadorian Andes with the support of our various partners in the US and Europe. Our CarbonNeg initiative is working to mitigate the effects of climate change through reforestation and conservation. AND OUR PROJECT HAS BEEN RECOGNIZED AS ECUADOR´S FIRST TO OBTAIN VALIDATION TO BOTH THE VERIFIED CARBON STANDARD AND THE CLIMATE, COMMUNITY & BIODIVERSITY ALLIANCE STANDARDS; THANKS TO THE AUDITING SERVICES OF RAINFOREST ALLIANCE. The CarbonNeg initiative restores bird habitat, buffers our bird sanctuaries and helps conserve and build connectivity between various Birdlife International designated Important Bird Areas. Whether we focus on the tortuous international efforts to agree to disagree on all the various protocols and super-committees, the different rulings of the EPA or the climate change deniers in the US Congress, it’s time to do something about anthropogenic climate change.

 

 

We consider human-caused climate change to be perhaps the biggest threat faced by birds and biodiversity generally. We are, after all, in a period of mass-extinctions as we speak. As such and with the help of supporters in Belgium and the USA we have begun the reforestation of more than 500 hectares, (1250 acres) in and around 7 different Important Bird Areas in northwestern Ecuador. This is only a small contribution, but it may just grow in coming years with your support.

 

This is a lengthy process, with precision mapping of different properties that meet different sets of technical criteria, forestry design documents and relations with the Ecuadorian Ministry of Environment’s Climate Change Sub-secretariat, and after beginning work in 2008, we are now ready for a massive planting campaign for the winter months of 2011-2012, followed by plantation maintenance and monitoring over a 20+ year period. One of the coming steps is the review of our project documents and local realities with inspectors sent from Rainforest Alliance. We hope to validate our project to both the Voluntary Carbon Standard and the Community, Climate and Biodiversity Alliance´s standards over the coming months.

Captura de carbono

La iniciativa CarbonNeg restaura hábitat, crea zonas de amortiguamiento para hábitats importantes y mejora la conectividad entre varias Áreas de Importancia para la Conservación de las Aves (IBAs por sus siglas en inglés). Con auspicios de Bélgica y Estados Unidos hemos comenzado la reforestación de más de 500 hectáreas de tierras privadas (participantes externos a la fundación), y tal vez sea una contribución módica ante el tamaño del problema, pero peor es no hacer nada.

Este es un proceso largo, con mapeo a precisión de las diferentes propiedades las cuales cumplen con diferentes criterios técnicos, la creación de planes forestales y relaciones con la Sub-secretaría de Cambio Climático del Ministerio del Ambiente del Ecuador. Y, después de haber iniciado los trabajos en el 2008, estamos listos para una campaña grande de siembra en los meses del invierno 2011-2012, seguida por mantenimientos, resiembras y monitoreo durante un periodo de 20 años. Entre los próximos pasos consta la validación del proyecto ante dos estándares, VCS y CCBA (Estándar de Carbono Voluntario y los estándares de la Alianza Comunidad, Clima y Biodiversidad) con auditores de Rainforest Alliance.

Consideramos que el cambio climático sea quizá la amenaza más grande que enfrentan las aves y el planeta.
